Films to Watch During Self-Quarantining

Amid our current state of reality with Covid-19, self-quarantining is the perfect time to indulge in one of my favorite past times, watching movies. I’ve put together a list (in no particular order) of my favorite films to get you through your quarantine.

13 Going on 30

This film follows a 13-year-old girl named Jenna Rink, who wakes up one day as no longer an angsty teen, but a big-time fashion magazine editor! Now 30 years old, Jenna has to deal with the consequences or her snobby behavior and booming career. In order to find answers, she seeks out her childhood best friend (who doubles as her romantic interest) and discovers what it takes to turn her life around. Jenna’s wardrobe is fantastic. My favorite outfit is the pink slip with embroidery under a polka-dot trench coat, with an iconic silver sequined Fendi baguette bag.

Blue Jasmine

Woody Allen’s 2013 film Blue Jasemone is a hidden gem that I love. Though Wood Allan is an extremely controversial topic right now, Blue Jasmine still remains one of my favorite films. The film follows a middle-aged woman named Jasmine (played by Cate Blanchett), a former Manhattan socialite who goes to live with her sister in San Francisco after her husband goes to prison for a white-collar crime. The fashion in this film is amazing, and I reminisce about Jasmine's outfits every day. While this film is certainly not a happy one, it reflects on the price of affluence and the consequences of depending on wealth and status, and who one is without either. My favorite fashion pieces in this film are Jasmine’s white wool boucle Chanel jacket and red Carolina Herrera evening gown.

The Devil Wears Prada

This is my absolute favorite movie. I’m not sure how many times I have seen this movie, but it gets better every time. This film follows Andy, a recent college graduate who moves to New York City to pursue a career in journalism. She finds a job as an assistant to the editor-in-chief of a major Fashion Magazine, even though she has no interest in fashion whatsoever. Throughout the movie, Andy gets a makeover on both her outfits and perspective on the fashion industry, all while under the intense scrutiny from her boss. The costumes in this film are amazing! Andy’s fashion transformation leads to some amazing outfits, my favorite pieces being the Chanel necklaces and long, brown leather trench.

Breakfast at Tiffany’s

This film is a true classic, and there is no film out there that is more iconic than this one. Audrey Hepburn plays Holly Golightly, a country girl turned society fixture, who supports herself by hanging around wealthy men. I love this movie not just because it is a classic, but because it portrays a time in New York that is almost dream-like and peaceful, even admits the chaotic parties and relationships Holly endures. The costumes, designed by Hubert de Givenchy, are amazing and almost become characters in the film because they are so elegant and memorable.

Scatter My Ashes at Bergdorf’s:

I’m always up for a good documentary, and this one is absolutely fabulous. This film looks at the history of the legendary New York City department store Bergdorf Goodman. This film uses standard documentary techniques, such as interviews (from celebrities, designers, and Bergdorf Goodman employees), stock images, and vintage video clips, making for a fun and fabulous film.

Legally Blonde

This film is both fun and empowering. It follows California sorority girl Elle Woods who gets into Harvard Law School in order to win back her ex-boyfriend, who dumped her because she was more of a Marilyn than a Jackie. Elle brings her positive-attitude and pink clothing and decor to Harvard and discovers along the way that she is meant to be a lawyer, and truly has what it takes to be successful in a rigorous academic environment. My favorite outfits in the film are the green sequined bikini and the pink dress with the sparkly belt from the final courtroom scene.
